Program

Chinese GDP growth of the first quarter of 2016 slipped to 6.7%, the lowest in 20 years. Regardless of this slowdown, China’s private equity (PE) industry reached new highs not only in the domestic market, but is also expanding globally at an unprecedented pace. Some Chinese PE firms, such as AGIC Capital, Legend Capital and Golden Brick Capital, have become global players and have entered into direct competition with European and U.S. counterparts in cross-border M&As.

Data from Financial Times suggests that Chinese firms have spent $144 billion buying non-Chinese firms till August 2016, surpassing the total value for 2015. According to Asian Venture Capital Journal (2016), fueled by China’s growing wealth, homegrown PE funds have taken part in at least $16.4 billion of cross-border deals so far this year, exceeding the previous annual record of $11 billion in 2012.

In Europe, Chinese PE firms have actively participated in the acquisition of a number of world leading multinational companies in European high-tech industries, such as German manufacturer KraussMaffei Group, Dutch chipmaker NXP Semiconductors NV’s standard products unit, Oslo-based Opera Software ASA’s web browser business, Italy based manufacturer Gimatic, etc.

How does the PE industry evolve in the Chinese market, what are the development path and specific features of Chinese PE firms and what is their role in growing Chinese M&As in Europe? NEOMA Confucius Institute for Business has the honor to invite Dr. Yuebing LU, a leading expert and practitioner of Chinese PE industry to share his insights about these issues.
