Borgen television star Sidse Babett Knudsen and revered actor Fabrice Luchini (Gemma Bovery – Festival 2015, Cycling with Molière – Festival 2014) combine their immense talents in this intriguing blend of courtroom drama and suppressed romance.
Luchini brings his instantly recognisable brand of irascible comic weariness to the role of severe judge Xavier Racine, presiding in a country court over a tragic murder case. He recognises jury member Ditte (Knudsen) as the anaesthetist he fell in love with several years before and, breaking with protocol, he connects with her outside. In wistful contemplative dialogue scenes, the judge softens his heart as they recall a past of missed opportunities, all while revelations of the murder unfold.
Fluently directed by Christian Vincent, of such classics as La Séparation and Haute Cuisine (Festival 2013), the film manages to be both grittily realistic and gently thoughtful. Courted was selected for competition in the Venice International Film Festival in 2015, and now Australian audiences can enjoy the opportunity of watching these two masterful performers reach into the depths of their characters with subtlety and humour.
